Art Gallery
At Akron-Canton Airport (CAK), we welcome visitors to experience diverse local rotating exhibits and innovative public art displays that communicate culture, environment, and community.
The mission of our program is to enrich the CAK passenger experience through visually engaging works that are reflective of the greater Akron/Canton community.
While at CAK, we encourage you to take time to view our carefully curated exhibitions. Whether you remain on the pre-security side of the airport or have extra time as you make your way to the gate post-security, please take a moment to experience local art that exemplifies the diverse talent of our vibrant community.
For those arriving or departing through CAK, you’ll notice public art displays in the atrium that serve as a gateway to our region’s history, values, and creativity.
Frederick J. Krum Aviation Park
Dedicated on December 17, 2003, the Frederick J. Krum Aviation Park commemorates the 100th anniversary of the Wright Brothers’ first flight and the dawning of the age of aviation. Located near the AvFlight West terminal, the park provides a quiet oasis amid the activity of the airport and features a full-scale replica of the Wright Flyer at its center.
The Wright Flyer offers a perspective on the remarkable progress of aviation since that historic first flight, while the park and its memorials honor Krum’s transformational leadership and the many individuals whose vision, guidance and foresight helped establish and grow the Akron-Canton Airport and its aviation community.
Aviation History & Art
Akron-Canton Airport offers a unique experience as one of the few commercial airports with a nationally recognized aviation museum located on-site. Home to Ohio's second-largest aviation museum, MAPS Air Museum showcases aviation history through aircraft, artifacts, exhibits and archives.
Through our partnership with MAPS, aviation history and art are woven throughout the terminal, including the historic 1940 Funk Model B-75L aircraft in the post-security area, a gallery of aviation-themed paintings near security, and four Wing Art installations located throughout ticketing and baggage claim.
Tree of Life
Through Akron-Canton Airport’s mission to enrich the passenger experience through visually engaging works reflective of our community, local artist Lenny Spengler was commissioned to design the terrazzo flooring artwork surrounding you. The artwork, “Tree of Life”, is meant to be a timeless piece that best represents a “sense of place” of our local community. The depictions reflect the cultural heritage of the Akron-Canton region while instilling a lasting impression on travelers at the beginning and end of their journey. The artwork breathes new life into the space while creating a calming flow as guests move throughout the terminal.
The Tree of Life is comprised of 46 leaves, a number which commemorates the inception of the Akron-Canton Airport in 1946. The leaves identify important people, places, and events that have helped shape the Akron-Canton community through leadership, social responsibility, mentorship, and effective change. With a passion for their craft and an inclusive, equitable mindset, the honorees have made significant contributions to the region in their own way. Some have sought to overcome social, environmental, and economic barriers, while others have promoted the development of our institutions to make our region better for generations to come. Akron-Canton Airport is extremely grateful for their contributions.
