Project will create infrastructure to support aviation businesses, private investment and jobs in Northeast Ohio
GREEN, Ohio — Akron-Canton Airport (CAK) today broke ground on a $6.7 million project on the west side of the airport that will create new aircraft apron space and market-rate hangar opportunities.
The project will provide infrastructure needed to support future development at CAK. With several developments in the pipeline, the airport estimates the work could help attract up to $20 million in private investment, support more than 50 new, full-time jobs and enable the opening of an educational facility expected to reach hundreds of students in Northeast Ohio.
The new apron will address an existing infrastructure gap that currently prevents development in the area. The project will also make market-rate hangar space available, creating another opportunity for aviation businesses to locate and grow at CAK.
“Today’s groundbreaking is an investment in the future of CAK and Northeast Ohio,” said Ren Camacho, CAK President and CEO. “By building the infrastructure aviation businesses need, we can open the door to new private investment, good jobs and educational opportunities. We’re grateful to our public and private partners for helping make this project possible.”
The airport recognized the City of Green, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, the Ohio Department of Transportation, the Ohio General Assembly and the Timken Foundation for their support. CAK also thanked its project partners CHA, Passero Associates and Shook Construction, as well as airport staff who worked with the aviation community to identify needs, secure funding and advance the project.
Funding for this development is through a series of grants secured by CAK from the following agencies:
