GREEN -  Akron-Canton Airport (CAK) is celebrating the grand opening of its Transportation Security Administration (TSA) checkpoint today. The new checkpoint is four times larger, is configured for four screening lanes (expandable to six lanes) and features the newest security screening technology.
The completion of the new checkpoint is part of CAK 2018 the airport's 10-year, $110 million Capital Improvement Plan. Construction began on the project in April and ended in early January 2012. The airport's food court was relocated to the other side of the main concourse to make way for the expanded screening checkpoint area.
"2011 was all about enhancing the Customer experience at CAK," said Rick McQueen, President & CEO. "Not only is the screening process more efficient, the improved dining options and a more spacious TSA security checkpoint improve the already relaxing experience our Customers rave about."

To celebrate the opening, the airport and local dignitaries held a grand opening celebration, technology demonstration and ribbon-cutting ceremony in new security screening space. The entire airport renovation cost more than $2.3 million. Funding sources include federal airport improvement program funds (AIP), passenger facility charges (PFCs) and airport operating revenue.

The newest security technology includes two millimeter wave Advanced Imaging Technology screening units equipped with image-free technology that can detect objects of concern while protecting Customer privacy. TSA funded the technology enhancements.
