Green, Ohio – The Akron-Canton Airport (CAK) unveiled plans to break ground on two new construction projects this summer, both part of CAK2018, the airport’s 10-year, $110 million improvement program. The two projects- a ticket wing upgrade and parking lot/entrance road redesign are scheduled to begin this summer and it all adds up to a better customer experience at CAK.

“As we prepare for our construction projects, I am reminded that we have to work harder and think deeper about what matters most – our Customers,” said President and CEO Rick McQueen. “These upgrades will make flying from CAK even more relaxing and enjoyable, while also making the airport a more sustainable facility. It’s what makes Akron-Canton a better way to go.”

Entrance Road Redesign: Designed by Hammontree & Associates of Canton, Ohio, this project will begin in May 2015. This 11.6 million dollar project will include widening the entrance road (loop) around the upper airport campus and parking lot improvements. The enhancements will make way-finding easier and reduce congestion in the front of the terminal building during peak travel times. Project financing comes from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) airport improvement program, passenger facility charges (PFC), and airport operating revenue. The project will be completed in two phases by Northstar Asphalt® of North Canton, Ohio.

Phase one (May to November 2015): reconfiguring and widening the entrance road (loop) around the front of the terminal. We will also upgrade critical infrastructure – water, sewer and storm lines.

Phase two (April to November 2016): Major improvements and the reconfiguration of parking lots on the main campus- Long Term A, Long Term B, Cell Phone free waiting lot, and rental cars. The economy lot remains unchanged. Improvements include:

1. Adding 250 premium covered parking spots
2. Relocating short-term parking
3. Creating a more spacious car rental lot with easier access for Customers to return and pick up rental cars
4. New entrance and exit lanes and booths
5. Sustainable LED lighting

Ticket Wing Upgrade: Designed by SōL Harris/Day Architects, of North Canton, Ohio, this project will begin in June 2015. The 2.7 million dollar upgrade of the ticket wing and front of the terminal building will add more circulation space and natural light for passengers. Other improvements include new, higher ceilings, sustainable LED lighting, and terrazzo flooring. The exterior will feature a glass canopy. The project will take up to a year to complete and is funded by revenue from the FAA airport improvement program, PFC, and airport operating revenue.
