Akron-Canton Airport Announces Third CAK 5K on the Runway
Special event is now an annual celebration
GREEN, OH - On Saturday, October 5th over 2,500 runners, wheelchair athletes and walkers will take off onto the runway of the Akron-Canton Airport to complete the CAK 5K on the Runway.
The third annual CAK 5K on the Runway hosted by the Akron-Canton Airport aims to celebrate the past, present and future of aviation with all proceeds of the race being donated to Akron Children’s Hospital and MAPS Air Museum.
“Our goal is to inspire the community to learn more about the rich history of aviation in our area while also engaging young folks to learn more about the opportunities that aviation presents to them,” said Ren Camacho, President and CEO of the Akron-Canton Airport. “Our hope in donating proceeds to both MAPS Air Museum and Akron Children's Hospital is that we celebrate the past (MAPS), present (CAK), and future (ACH families) of aviation.”
Along the course, participants will pass vintage military aircraft and enter the Ohio National Guard in which they will have the opportunity to shake hands with servicemen and women. After the race is complete, participants are welcome to enjoy the MAPS Air Museum at no cost.
Since the first 5K on the Runway in 2016, CAK has donated over $22,000 to local nonprofits and looks to continue the tradition of giving back to the community.
“The airport is here to serve the community, and we wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for the support and loyalty of the Akron-Canton region,” said Camacho. “We are always looking for ways to be stewards of the community, and this event encompasses our mission and all of our values. We look forward to making it an annual event.”
Beginning this year, the course is USA Track & Field certified. This is an important certification program to road racers, as it allows participants to submit their performances to be nationally ranked or held as a record.
Participants can sign up at https://www.runtoyouracing.com/cak-5k-on-the-runway beginning March 22, 2019. Registration costs are free for children in strollers, $15 for up to 18 years old and $35 for adults 18 and older.
