Almost one year after breaking ground on the $34 million CAK Gate Modernization and Expansion Program, the final steel beam has been set for the new concourse.
“Phases of this project have been orchestrated to minimize Customer impact,” said Camacho. “Most Customers haven’t realized construction is occurring until they’re taxing away from their gate, or they’re driving away from the airport. We strive to make CAK a better way to go, even during these times of construction.”
The $34 million gate modification project consists of three main phases:
“Our facility has worked well for the community for over 60 years; however, the time has come to accommodate larger aircraft, technology advancements and Customer needs,” said Ren Camacho, President and CEO of the Akron-Canton Airport. “Gone are the days of the dash-8s and gone are the days of ground boarding. The airport and airlines share the belief that our Customers deserve the best, and we will continue to deliver the best on all fronts.”
Bright, open spaces with ample seating and abundant power outlets will be the first modifications Customers will surely enjoy. New food and beverage concepts will include a sit-down restaurant and large bar within the gate area, healthy food options, and quick grab-and-go meals.
Favorite conveniences like the free business lounge, mother’s room and Kids PlayPort will find new homes in the expanded concourse along with new features, like a sensory room and pet relief area.
The much-anticipated terminal makeover also includes jet bridges on every gate, so no passenger will have to make the quick dash from tarmac to aircraft in the event of inclement weather.
“In addition to modern amenities, we will continue to provide a clean, friendly environment with accommodations for all,” said Camacho. “We look forward to new projects rolling out alongside this monumental capital improvement such as an invigorated local arts program, increased inclusion programs, and additional ways to integrate education into our operations.”
The new gates are projected to open for Customer enjoyment by fall of 2020, contingent upon weather. The full project, including demolition of the old gates, will be completed by mid-2021.
