Akron-Canton Airport Celebrates 75 Years of Serving the Community
GREEN, Ohio – Akron-Canton Airport (CAK) is celebrating its 75th anniversary October 13, 2021 with a Customer appreciation celebration accompanied by social media contests and engagement opportunities.
For the traveling public and those visiting CAK on Wednesday, there will be complimentary refreshments to enjoy along with prizes and a viewing area of our historic photos and information.
Those who don’t have travel plans on Wednesday can enjoy a video compilation of historical photos here, or on CAK’s social media channels. The airport invites the community to post their favorite memories and photos on social media to share in the collective celebration.
“Local airports exist to enhance the quality of life for residents and enable global business, therefore lending to economic prosperity of a community, and CAK is proud to do just that for the Akron-Canton Metroplex,” said Ren Camacho, CAK President and CEO. “We are thrilled to celebrate 75 years of community stewardship today with our travelers, airport partners and employees.”
Since its grand opening in 1946, CAK has grown with the surrounding communities. As Stark and Summit Counties came together in years leading up to the grand opening, the population hovered around 600,000. Now, the two counties boast a population nearing 1 million residents.
The airport has also grown to serve the larger Northeast Ohio region, by offering nonstop flights at low fares, it has positioned itself to be the easier and more enjoyable airport in the region.
One of the most important roles that CAK has taken on during the past 75 years is connecting the community to the world. From that, business has flourished around the region, and because of the connectivity and economic impact, the quality of life is enhanced.
As a self-sustaining entity, the airport proves to be a vital asset to the local community with an annual impact of over $1 billion in total economic activity, $212 million in total payroll generation and $85 million in total tax revenue generated from 4,486 jobs according to a 2018 study.
Delivering on its promise to be a better way to go, the airport has continued to invest in upgrades like the recently opened gate modernization program (2020) and on-site ground transportation, making travel faster and more enjoyable. American Airlines, Breeze Airways, Spirit Airlines and United Airlines serve 11 nonstop destinations from CAK.
