Pets Can Fly, But At What Cost?
The recent New York Times article by Michelle Higgins points out the increased costs to take your beloved pet on your flight with you. For those who haven't checked recently, fees have increased substantially! In fact, in many cases it's cheaper to fly yourself than your pet. Quick samplings of costs reveal average fares around $100.00 each way, and expect even more if your pet needs checked in the luggage department. Some carriers also will not allow checked animals depending on weather conditions at arriving and departing airports due to heat and cold.
These current conditions have brought on the new airline that caters to pets only called Pet Airways. Based in Delray Beach, Florida, this carrier operates between smaller airports around large metropolitan areas such as New York, Washington D.C., Los Angeles, and Denver. Using climate- controlled cabins, staffed with a flight attendant to check on the animals frequently, the carrier hopes to provide animal lovers with an alternative to regular carriers. Fares start at $149.00 each way and start-up bookings are strong.
Who would think that in this economy a concept like this would be so popular! Makes us all appreciate the fact that animals really are "part of the family." I'm sure the flight attendants on this carrier love their passengers. They can't write letters to the company for poor service, and if they like you will give you a warm lick!
